What difference has ten years of storm names made to UK?
Published: 11/10/2025

Every storm season begins in September with lists of names from A to W, following the US National Hurricane Centre naming convention that skips Q, U, X, Y, and Z. Collaborating with Irish and Dutch weather services, storm names reflect the diversity of these countries, inviting public suggestions and incorporating names inspired by real-life people and pets. While popular names like "Bram" and "Ruby" emerge, it's unlikely that names beyond W will be reached in a season, as exemplified by past storm counts and the most active season ending with Storm Lilian in 2023/24, and the quietest season being 2022/23 with Storms Antoni and Betty named in August.
