Why the Indian passport is falling in global ranking
Published: 11/1/2025

India's passport ranking has fallen to 85th out of 199 countries on the Henley Passport Index, reflecting challenges faced by Indian travelers in obtaining visas for Western and European countries. Despite being the fifth-largest global economy, India's passport ranking has remained in the 80s for the past decade, with only 57 visa-free destinations for Indian passport holders. The decline in rank is attributed to the increasingly competitive global mobility landscape, where countries are forming more travel partnerships to benefit citizens and economies, leading to improved passport ranks for countries like China.
