Latvian MPs voted to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, an international treaty aimed at protecting women from violence, sparking protests in Riga. The move, supported by ultra-conservative groups, has caused controversy as it is seen as undermining gender equality and promoting "gender ideology". The decision, not reaching a two-thirds majority, may be reviewed by President Edgars Rinkevics, who will consider legal, not ideological, factors in his assessment.
