Spain to open network of climate shelters
Spain is launching a network of climate shelters to protect people from intense heatwaves, announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in response to the country's increasingly hot summers. The plan includes setting up shelters in public buildings to provide refuge for all individuals, especially those most affected by extreme heat. This initiative comes after Spain faced its hottest summer on record, with temperatures exceeding 45C during a 16-day heatwave last August. Barcelona already has about 400 climate shelters in public buildings, including libraries, museums, and sports facilities, offering air-conditioned spaces with free water for those seeking relief from the heat.
