French pair sentenced in Iran on spying charges

French pair Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms in Iran for espionage, spying for France and Israel. The pair, detained since May 2022, were the subject of a potential prisoner swap that may have included an Iranian woman in French custody. Kohler, 40, and Paris, 72, were arrested during a tourist trip. Human rights groups believe tourists and dual nationals are often used as leverage in diplomatic negotiations by Iran.
