Assata Shakur, black liberation activist exiled in Cuba dies at 78
Black liberation activist Assata Shakur, exiled in Cuba, has passed away at 78. She was granted asylum in 1984 by Fidel Castro, after escaping from a New Jersey prison in 1979. Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesimard, died of unspecified health conditions in Havana and was the aunt of late rapper Tupac Shakur. She was a prominent figure in the Black Liberation Army and Black Panther Party, advocating for radical resistance to racism in the US.
