Record 111,000 UK asylum applications in past year, figures show

In the past year, the UK recorded a record 111,000 asylum applications, a 14% increase from the previous year. The government is processing cases faster than before, with a backlog of 71,000 cases awaiting initial decisions. Additionally, small boat arrivals accounted for 88% of arrivals, with Afghans being the most common nationality among them.
