Once-extinct wildcats to make a comeback in England
Published: 11/18/2025

The South West Wildcat Project aims to reintroduce 50 European wildcats in mid-Devon countryside, potentially bringing back a once-extinct species to England by 2028. While plans face concerns about potential threats to poultry and cross-breeding with domestic cats, conservationists are hopeful for the wildcats' revival. Supported by positive public sentiment and research, the project seeks to address challenges like habitat impact through consultations with farmers and landowners and protective measures against potential conflicts with other species.
