China academic intimidation claim referred to counter-terrorism police
An investigation into alleged Chinese pressure on Sheffield Hallam University to halt human rights research has been referred to counter-terrorism police under the National Security Act. The BBC and Guardian reported China's intimidation tactics over Xinjiang forced labor research. Professor Laura Murphy faced pressure to cease her work, supported by threats from individuals purported to be from China's National Security Service. However, the university later allowed the research to continue after reversing its decision.
