In Vilnius, Lithuania, fly larvae are being used to process food waste, converting it into protein-rich feed efficiently. Energesman, a waste management company, is saving the city millions by utilizing flies to tackle the 2,700 tonnes of food waste generated annually. While this approach is gaining traction globally, some UK councils are interested in implementing similar systems, although government regulations currently prevent widespread adoption. Larry Kotch from Flybox is optimistic that UK councils could utilize fly larvae for food waste processing in the near future if regulations align with scientific advancements.
