Trains return to public ownership in south Essex
Published: 7/20/2025

Rail services between south Essex and London operated by c2c have been brought under public ownership with the creation of Great British Railways, marking the first time since the 20th century. This move, part of efforts to address issues like high costs and fragmentation, was made as c2c's contract expired, facilitated by the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024 passed by Labour. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasizes the goal of delivering superior services for passengers through this nationalization, with hopes for improved efficiency and cost savings across the railway system in England, Wales, and Scotland.
