Council tax plan could 'reduce' help for poorest
Durham County Council is considering reducing its Council Tax Reduction Scheme to save money, potentially requiring its poorest residents to pay more towards their bills. The current scheme allows for discounts of up to 100%, which the council is considering capping. The council is looking to consult on four options, including residents paying minimum amounts of 10%, 20%, or 25% of their full bill, to address budgetary pressures. This potential change is estimated to save between £3.8m and £10.35m annually.
