South Sudan's First Vice-President Riek Machar faces murder, treason, and crimes against humanity charges after being under house arrest since March, leading to fears of reigniting the country's civil war. The 2018 peace deal that ended a five-year conflict has been strained between Machar and President Salva Kiir due to ethnic tensions and sporadic violence. Machar allies, Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol and Lt Gen Gabriel Duop Lam, are among seven others charged, with an additional 13 suspects at large related to a militia attack in March that resulted in numerous casualties.
