Namibia loses bid to overturn ban on rhino horn trade
Published: 12/5/2025

Namibia's bid to overturn the international ban on trading black and white rhino horns was rejected at a conservation meeting. The country also tried to lift the ban on African savanna elephant ivory, with both proposals being defeated. Rhinos are prized for their horns in traditional medicine, but dehorning practices like those in Namibia are implemented to deter poaching. The rejection highlights ongoing efforts to protect critically endangered species like black rhinos and curb illegal wildlife trafficking.
