Lost in translation - How Africa is trying to close the AI language gap
Published: 9/4/2025

Africa is bridging the AI language gap by creating datasets in indigenous languages through the Africa Next Voices project. With a focus on inclusivity, languages like Kikuyu, Hausa, isiZulu, and more are being recorded to develop AI tools that cater to African speakers. This initiative aims to overcome the challenges faced by many like Farmer Kelebogile Mosime, who benefits from using AI-Farmer in Sesotho, isiZulu, and Afrikaans for her farming business. Companies like Lelapa AI are also advocating for the inclusion of African languages in AI to improve access to essential services beyond convenience.
