Days before Guyana's general election, security forces reported that a boat carrying election officials and ballot boxes was shot at from the Venezuelan shore in the Essequibo region. The incident, amid a territorial dispute, saw Guyana blaming Venezuela for the attack, which was denied by Venezuela. Guyana insisted shots were fired from Venezuelan territory, but the ballot boxes were safely delivered to polling stations as voters chose their next president and parliament members.
