France will ban smoking on beaches, parks, and near schools starting July 1, excluding outdoor areas of cafes and bars. Those breaking the rules will face a €135 fine, enforced by regular police. The initiative, led by health minister Catherine Vautrin, aims to protect children from secondhand smoke and reduce smoking rates in a country where over 23% of the population smokes daily.
