New Zealand Falcon named Bird of the Year in annual competition, winning 21% of votes due to their remarkable speed and hunting skills. The kārearea, as known in Māori, can dive at speeds of 200km/h, thriving in dense forests. This year's competition, celebrating its 20th anniversary, raised awareness for native species at risk, with a record 75,000+ voters participating and highlighting the need for conservation efforts to protect endangered birds like the kākāpō and karure black robin.
