Delhi's lonely African elephant was killed by rare rodent-borne virus

The only African elephant in Delhi's zoo died from a rare rodent-borne virus, EMCV, causing fatal heart inflammation and brain fever spread through rodent faeces and urine. Shankar, the 29-year-old elephant, was found positive for EMCV during his autopsy. This tragic incident underscores the need for proper care and monitoring of captive animals to prevent such outbreaks and deaths.
