Coup plot charges for former Romanian presidential candidate
Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has been charged with attempting to stage a coup after the 2024 presidential election was annulled. Prosecutors allege he conspired with Horatiu Potra and his group, who were also charged with instigating the coup. The case involves a planned raid on Bucharest that police foiled, and Georgescu's popularity was boosted by a mass influence operation, allegedly orchestrated from abroad. Potra is currently not in Romania and may seek asylum in Russia, while the trial for Georgescu could potentially begin in early 2026.
