Ahead of the G20, is Johannesburg's city centre in ruins?
In preparation for the G20 summit, Johannesburg's city centre faces challenges with over 100 derelict buildings plagued with issues like rubbish, open sewage, criminal gangs, and hijackings. The neglected state of the city has prompted concerns from President Cyril Ramaphosa and Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero. The residents in these buildings lack basic utilities like water and electricity and face risks of fire hazards and unsanitary living conditions, highlighting a longstanding housing problem and criminal activity in the city.
