'Year of octopus' declared after warmer seas leads to record numbers in UK

The Wildlife Trusts has declared 2025 the "Year of the Blooming Octopus" in the UK, due to a significant rise in octopus numbers off the south-west coast, linked to warmer seas possibly caused by climate change. Octopus sightings hit a record high since 1950, with over 1,200 tonnes caught by fishermen this summer. However, it remains uncertain if this surge is permanent or cyclical, posing potential impacts on shellfish populations and the fishing industry, necessitating potential adjustments in fishing practices.
