Worst bleaching on record for Western Australian coral reefs

Western Australian coral reefs have experienced their worst bleaching event on record following a severe marine heatwave. Warm water temperatures between August and May led to significant heat stress, causing coral to expel algae and bleach, which can be fatal. The damage spans 1,500km and includes previously unaffected areas, reflecting a larger global coral bleaching crisis due to high ocean temperatures.
