The Treasury is set to insure the Bayeux Tapestry for an estimated £800m as it travels to the British Museum next year under the Government Indemnity Scheme (GIS). The 70m-long tapestry, depicting the Battle of Hastings in 1066, will be displayed in London while its home in Bayeux undergoes renovations. The scheme allows high-value artworks like Vincent van Gogh's The Bedroom to be exhibited in the UK, saving museums an estimated £81m annually in insurance costs.
