Terminally ill should be spared council tax, say charities
Published: 7/19/2025

Leading end-of-life charities in the UK, Marie Curie and Hospice UK, advocate for terminally ill individuals facing less than 12 months to live to be exempt from paying council tax. Manchester City Council recently introduced this compassionate scheme, and the charities are urging other local councils and governments to follow suit. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens, particularly for those of working age, who may face challenges such as reduced income and increased costs due to a terminal diagnosis.
