Radioactive water 'leaked into loch' from nuclear base
Published: 8/9/2025

Radioactive water from a Royal Navy nuclear base leaked into Loch Long due to burst pipes, as revealed by documents accessed after a six-year battle involving Scotland's Information Commissioner. Despite the leak, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency found no environmental harm from the discharges. While the Ministry of Defence insists there were no unsafe releases of radioactive material into the environment, the files indicated maintenance failures in the network of water pipes at the Coulport armaments depot. This incident included the release of low levels of tritium, a material used in nuclear warheads, in August 2019.
