Private baby scan clinics putting expectant mothers at risk
Published: 11/3/2025

Private baby scan clinics are being criticized by the Society of Radiographers for allowing unqualified non-specialists to conduct scans, leading to misdiagnoses and dangerous advice for expectant mothers. This practice raises concerns about the quality of care, with instances of serious health conditions being missed, ectopic pregnancies being undiagnosed, and even cases of sexual misconduct by some private sonographers. The SoR is urging caution against the use of these services, especially pop-up clinics, which offer scans before the routine 20-week NHS check, potentially putting mothers and babies at risk.
