Mystery over 'unusually large' Roman shoes
Published: 7/3/2025

Unusually large Roman shoes discovered at a Roman fort in Northumberland have puzzled archaeologists, with eight of the 32 shoes found measuring over 30cm (11.8in) long. The shoes, believed to be close to 2,000 years old, were unearthed in a defensive ditch at the site, preserved due to low oxygen conditions in the soil. Further analysis, including examining pottery found in the same soil layers, is underway to determine the time period of the shoes and shed light on the people who lived in the area.
