Most new build homes must have solar panels - Miliband
Published: 6/5/2025

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced that most new build homes in England will be required to have solar panels, saving households approximately £500 per year. The regulations, part of the Future Homes Standard, aim to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Developers will have a transitional period to adjust to the new rules, which will mandate solar panels on the "vast majority" of new homes, with exceptions for buildings covered by shade. Home Builders Federation supports the move but cautions against excessive paperwork that could impede the government's target of building 1.5 million new homes by 2029.
