Inquiry to review rising levels of youth inactivity
Published: 11/9/2025

Government launches inquiry led by Alan Milburn to review rising levels of youth inactivity among "Neets" - young people not in education, employment, or training. The crisis affecting 16-24 year olds is seen as an urgent issue by Work and Pensions Secretary, Pat McFadden, with current statistics showing one in eight young people are Neet. The review aims to address barriers such as long-term sickness or disability, with a focus on reducing the long-term costs and transitioning young people from benefits to employment. Results of the inquiry are expected to be published next summer.
