Emergency alerts to be sent to UK smartphones

The UK government will test its emergency alert system for smartphones in September, aiming to ensure readiness for situations like extreme weather events or terror attacks. In a previous national test in 2023, technical issues were encountered, with some not receiving alerts or receiving them earlier than expected. The upcoming test will help address these problems and familiarize the public with the alerts, similar to systems used in the US and Japan, and only smartphones on 4G or 5G networks will receive the messages.
