E.coli infections rise due to salad leaf outbreaks
Published: 7/30/2025

E.coli infections increased by 26% in England last year, affecting mostly young children, due to outbreaks linked to contaminated salad leaves. The UK Health Security Agency advises parents to ensure children wash hands before eating and after outdoor activities to prevent infections. Symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC) include vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, and can lead to a life-threatening kidney condition. The rise in infections was attributed to various sources, including contaminated beef, fresh fruit, and salad leaves.
