California bans most law enforcement including ICE from wearing masks

California bans law enforcement officers from wearing face masks while on duty in response to federal agents wearing masks during immigration raids in Los Angeles. The ban, effective from 2026, aims to prevent what Governor Gavin Newsom calls "secret police" activities. The legislation also requires officers to identify themselves by name and badge number during duties and prohibits their entry into schools, non-public hospital areas, and emergency rooms without warrants or court orders.
