Scotland to recover winter fuel payment from better-off pensioners
Published: 6/18/2025

Scotland announces changes to winter fuel payment, restricting it to pensioners with incomes below £35,000. The government will recover funds from wealthier pensioners through the tax system, following the UK's lead. This move aims to ensure payments reach those most in need, with around 720,000 people expected to qualify. Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville highlighted that Scottish pensioners will still receive more than their UK counterparts, with payments set at £203.40 or £305.10 per household.
