Lack of charging facilities a 'barrier' for electric lorries
Published: 9/3/2025

The lack of public charging facilities for electric lorries is a major barrier for the adoption and operation of eHGVs, limiting their range and operational capabilities. Despite the environmental benefits of eHGVs, the shortage of charging infrastructure hinders their widespread use, particularly for long-haul operations. Welch's Transport, one of the UK's first to introduce electric heavy goods vehicles to its fleet, faces challenges due to limited public chargers and high charging costs, making national operations difficult. Nonetheless, sales of eHGVs are increasing, with a 28% rise in the UK in 2023, indicating a growing interest in electric commercial vehicles within the industry.
